Tourism development and poverty alleviation in sub-Saharan African countries: an empirical investigation

In this study, the impact of tourism development on poverty alleviation is examined using panel data from 32 sub-Saharan African (SSA) countries during period 2005–2014. Two indicators are used, namely tourist arrivals and revenue. addition, four control variables have been economic growth, trade, rule law, income inequality (measured by Gini coefficient, Atkinson index Palma ratio), thereby leading to three separate specifications for each proxy. Using generalized method moments (GMM) regression analysis, study found that not unanimous. When number used as a proxy, results show an increase in consistently leads household welfare; hence, decrease poverty, irrespective specification used.
